LibChat: Add and manage IP addresses banned from using LibChat

Banning an IP address

In the event you encounter a patron is abusing your chat service, you can ban their IP address. This will prevent that person from starting new chats from that IP address in the future. There are two ways you can ban an IP address.

From the LibChat settings

Admins can ban IP addresses by doing the following:

  1. Go to Admin > LibChat Set-up.
  2. Go to the Banned IP List tab.
  3. Click on the Add new IP Address to Banned List button.

  1. Enter the IP address you want to ban.
  2. If you'd like, you can also supply a reason for why you are banning this IP address.
  3. Save your changes.

During a chat

When an operator is chatting with a patron, they can ban the user by clicking on the Ban User () button in the chat window.

From a chat transcript

If it is clear from the transcript of the chat that user should be blocked from submitting any new chats, you can opt to ban the IP address of the user.

  1. After going to LibChat > Transcripts (and filtering the transcripts as needed), you will be able to ban a user's IP address by clicking on the Ban this IP () icon in the Actions column.

  1. On the Ban an IP Address modal, edit the IP address as needed, and optionally add a reason for the ban.
  2. Click Save.
    • Note: banned IP addresses can be managed by Admins from Admin > LibChat Set-up > Banned IP List tab.

From a missed chat

If it is clear from the transcript of the missed chat that user should be blocked from submitting any new chats, you can opt to ban the IP address of the user.

  1. After going to LibChat > Missed Chats, you will be able to ban a user's IP address by clicking on the Ban this IP () icon in the Actions column.

  2. Click Save.
    • Note: banned IP addresses can be managed by Admins from Admin > LibChat Set-up > Banned IP List tab.

Managing banned IP addresses

To view an manage banned IP addresses, go to Admin > LibChat Set-up and click on the Banned IP List tab. This list will include:

  • The IP address being banned
  • The reason it was banned
  • Who banned it
  • When it was banned

If you need to remove an IP address from your banned IP list, click on that record's trash can () icon in the Action column.
