LTI: Add the Automagic 1.0 LTI Tool to Moodle

In this article

The Automagic LTI tool allows you to embed content from your LibGuides site into Moodle using matching vs. selecting content manually. A field from a Moodle course is compared with the metadata added to LibGuides, and any resulting matches are displayed in the Moodle course.

As with most instructions for other vendors' products, instructions may be a bit different, depending on the version of Moodle you're using. The general steps should be consistent, though:

  • First, you need to configure the external tool in your site administration.
  • Next, you need to add the tool to courses.

LibApps: Get the Configuration Information

The LibApps LTI Tool is available to CMS and E-Reserves subscribers. You must be a LibApps Admin to get the configuration information for your system.

You'll need to get your Moodle admins the configuration information for the Automagic tool or create an account in one of your Springshare apps and make them a LibApps Admin.

  1. Go to the LibApps Dashboard.
    • Log in using your LibApps login URL, or
    • Log into any of your Springshare products, click the blue menu on the left, and choose LibApps.
  2. Go to Admin > LTI Tool Builder.
    • LibApps Admins can access this area. If you are on the LibApps dashboard and do not see an Admin menu, you are not a LibApps Admin.
  3. Click the View/Edit Tool () icon for the Version 1.0 Automagic tool.

  1. Go to the Configuration tab. Send your Moodle admins the following fields:
    • LTI Launch URL
    • LTI Consumer Key
    • LTI Shared Secret

You do not need the Config URL for Moodle.

When testing this setup, you'll need to make sure that you have your Automagic tool configured in LibApps/LibGuides. While your Moodle admins are configuring things there, review the documentation and configure the tool / add some test metadata on the LibApps/LibGuides side as well.

Set Up the Tool Provider

  1. Go to Site Administration > Plugins Tab> External Tools > Manage Tools
  2. Choose Configure a tool manually.
  3. Fill out the form:
    1. Tool Settings Section:
      • Tool Name => This is what the tool will be called in Moodle. We recommend a descriptive name.
      • Tool URL => LTI Launch URL
      • Consumer Key => LTI Consumer Key
      • Shared Secret => LTI Shared Secret
        • Note: sometimes copying & pasting the shared secret adds an extra space before the secret begins. Double-check the entered secret using the eye icon and make sure there are no leading spaces.
      • Tool Configuration Usage => If Show in activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool is selected, then this LTI automagic tool will appear as its own entry when you add an activity to a course. Select this if you want to make it easier for course creators to add the automagic tool on their own.
    2. Privacy Section:
      • Accept grades from the tool => Never.
Selecting never ensures that the LTI tool will not appear as a graded assignment, and will not create entries in your gradebook.
      • Share launcher's name/email with tool => Optional
The LTI tool does not need to know the user's name or email, and so this can be set to never. LibApps does not store the name and email data of users who launch the tool..
  4. Click Save Changes.

Add the tool to your course

Now that the tool is configured, it needs to be placed into a course so that students can access your LibGuides content from it.

  1. Inside a course, choose Add an activity or resource in the topic where you'd like to place the tool. Often the first topic, with your course announcements, is a good place to insert the tool.
If your institution has a default course shell it creates new courses from, you can add the automagic tool to this default course, then create a backup of the course. Any new courses you restore from this backup will then have the automagic tool already inside.
  2. If you chose to add the tool in the activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool, you can select the LTI tool from the chooser directly.
Otherwise, you can select external tool, and select the LTI tool from the Preconfigured tool dropdown.
  3. Give your tool an Activity name. This is the title of the link your students will see in Moodle, so make sure they will know what it means. Names like "Library Resources" are a good idea.
  4. Click Save and return to course or Save and display.
