LTI: Add the Single-Course (Manual) LTI tool to Moodle

In this article

The Single-Course LTI tool allows you to embed Guide content, Database links, and/or E-Reserves Courses into Moodle.

As with most instructions for other vendors' products, instructions may be a bit different, depending on the version of Moodle you're using. The general steps should be consistent, though:

  • First, you need to configure the external tool in your site administration.
  • Then, you need to add the tool to courses, and make your content selection.
  • You should use the LTI 1.3 Tool in LibApps to set this up in Moodle in order to get the placements set up properly.

LibApps: Get the Configuration Information

The LibApps LTI Tool is available to CMS and E-Reserves subscribers. You must be a LibApps Admin to get the configuration information for your system.

You'll need to get your Moodle admins the configuration information for the Single-Course tool or create an account in one of your Springshare apps and make them a LibApps Admin.

Create a new Single-Course LTI tool

If no Single-Course tools using Version 1.3 exist in your system or you want to create additional tools (you can create multiple tools, if needed), you can create a new tool to use in Moodle.

  1. Go to the LibApps Dashboard.
    • Log in using your LibApps login URL, or
    • Log into any of your Springshare products, click the blue menu on the left, and choose LibApps.
  2. Go to Admin > LTI Tool Builder.
    • LibApps Admins can access this area. If you are on the LibApps dashboard and do not see an Admin menu, you are not a LibApps Admin.
  3. Click the Add LTI 1.3 Tool button.

  1. On the External tool configuration page, complete the necessary fields starting with the Tool Name.
    • This is what the tool will be called in Moodle. We recommend a descriptive name that will be easily identifiable by course creators.
  2. Tool URL: Enter the Tool URL for the LTI tool from LibApps.
  3. LTI version: Select LTI 1.3 from the dropdown.
  4. Public key type: Select Keyset URL from the dropdown.
  5. Public keyset: Enter the Public keyset value for the LTI tool from LibApps.
  6. Initiate login URL: Enter the Initiate Login URL for the LTI tool from LibApps.
  7. Redirection URI(s): Enter the Redirection URI(s) value for the LTI tool from LibApps.
  8. Tool configuration usage: Select either Show as a preconfigured tool when adding an external tool or Show in activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool.
    • Note: If Show in activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool is selected, then the LTI Single-Course tool will appear as its own entry when you add an activity to a course. Select this if you want to make it easier for course creators to add the Single-Course tool on their own.
  9. In the Privacy section, set the Accept grades from the tool dropdown to Never.
    • Selecting Never ensures that the LTI tool will not appear as a graded assignment, and will not create entries in your grade book.
  10. Click Save Changes.

Add the tool to your course

Now that the tool is configured, it needs to be placed into a course so that students can access your LibGuides content from it.

  1. While in Edit Mode for a course, click the Add an activity or resource link in the Topic where you'd like to place the tool.
    • Note: If your institution has a default course shell it creates new courses from, you can add the Single-Course tool to this default course, then create a backup of the course. Any new courses you restore from this backup will then have the Single-Course tool already inside.
adding a new resource to a topic
  1. Select External Tool from the Add an activity or resource modal.
    1. When adding the tool, if you chose Show in activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool for the Tool configuration usage field, you can select the LTI tool from the chooser directly.
selecting the External tool option
  1. Give the new external tool an Activity Name.
    • This is the title of the link your students will see in Moodle, so make sure they will know what it means. Names like "Library Resources" or "Research Guides" are a good idea.
  2. Select the LTI tool from the Preconfigured tool dropdown.
  3. Click Save and return to course or Save and display.
