How to use drag & drop to create, assign, and adjust times for shifts

LibStaffer makes it easy to manage shifts using drag & drop actions. When using the Calendar View, you can use drag & drop to add new shifts to specific dates and times; assign staff to existing shifts; and adjust the start & end times of a shift.

(Please note: you cannot drag & drop shifts when using the Staff Timeline or Shift Timeline views.)

Creating new shifts

While viewing your schedule in calendar view (day, week, or month), click on the Show Drag/Drop Shift Options button. From the dropdown menu, select a duration listed under Create New Shift. For example, select 2 hours if you want to create a two hour shift.

The next step will vary depending upon which calendar view you're using. See the sections below for more details.

Week and Day views

When using either the Week or Day view, click on the staff member you want to assign to your new shift and drag them to the desired day and time on the calendar.

As you're dragging the shift onto the calendar, the target times will be shaded blue so you can see exactly where you're dropping the shift.

Month view

If you are using the month view, this will work differently because it does not display individual time slots on each day. As a result, a shift can't be created and assigned immediately.

Instead, after dragging and dropping a staff member to a day on the calendar, the Add New Shift modal will appear. This will allow you to set up the shift times and other options, then either save or save & assign the new shift.

Assigning staff to shifts

While viewing your schedule in calendar view (day, week, or month), click on the Show Drag/Drop Shift Options button. From the dropdown menu, make sure the Assign to existing shift option is selected.

Then, simply click and drag a staff member over to the calendar and drop them onto the shift you want them to work. As you hover over shifts, the target shift's border will be highlighted in red so you can see exactly where you're dropping the assignment.

Adjusting the start & end times of shifts

When viewing the Day or Week calendar view of your schedule, you can use drag & drop actions to move a shift to a new start time or adjust a shift's end time.

Changing a shift's start time

To move a shift to a new start time, click and drag the shift up or down on the same day (note: you cannot drag & drop a shift onto a different date).

Dragging a shift to a new start time

As you are dragging the shift around, you'll see a silhouette of the shift showing the new times. Once you've reached the desired time, drop the shift onto the calendar.

You'll then be prompted to confirm the new shift times. Click OK in the alert message to save your changes.

To increase or decrease a shift's end time, hover your mouse cursor over the bottom edge of the shift until you see the resize cursor appear.
